Anti-Racism Resources

STEPS joins with others across our world in the condemnation of all forms of racist violence against black, brown, Indigenous and people of colour. As an organization committed to supporting communities to activate public space by leveraging the power of arts to raise awareness about inequities in our cities, this moment demands that we become better allies. This begins with examining our own blindspots and privilege as an organization that operates on stolen land in Tkaronto.

BIPOC leaders and organizers, many of them artists, are on the front lines in our cities. From our inception, STEPS has been fortunate to collaborate with many of these individuals. We reaffirm our commitment to amplifying the work of BIPOC artists and communities who are responding, speaking out for justice, and providing space to express themselves at this time.

We will be expanding the ways in which we support BIPOC artists through targeted residencies and equitably paid opportunities. We will continue to facilitate participatory arts programming in some of Canada’s most diverse communities and provide a platform for people to share their vision for our cities. Furthermore, we will continue to listen, learn, and identify ways we can actively address and dismantle racist and exclusionary systems through our work. We acknowledge that there is so much more we can do, and we welcome feedback on where we can do better.

In order not to distract from the important work of Black leaders and communities, we paused our scheduled programming last week and have been taking time to reassess how we can continue to improve our programs to be more inclusive and specifically dismantle anti-black racism moving forward. We have shared a list of anti-racism resources and funding efforts, and we encourage individuals to take action by learning and giving what they can.

We shared the above statement with our community on March 20, 2020.

The following is a collection of resources that we feel may be valuable to our collaborators. Many have been created by colleagues, while others have been developed or shared by people around the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is by no means intended to be an exhaustive list. We encourage you to share additional resources that you have found valuable with us, and we will update this list accordingly.

The arts community is resilient, and we are confident that we can come out of this stronger together!
Please reach out if you have additional resources to add to this list.
